Chapter One

Something pulls Alexis’ attention away from the darkly handsome man lying in the hospital bed and behind her to the door of the recovery room. There she sees Sonny’s father, Mike.

“Oh, Mike,” Alexis says as she stands.

Mike slowly steps into the room and over to join Alexis at Sonny’s bedside.

“I didn’t want to…interrupt…”

“You’re not interrupting,” Alexis says. “Of course you’re not interrupting…”

“How is he?”

“Bobbie says that he’s stable.” She turns to look at him. “But he still hasn’t opened his eyes…How long has it been since he’s been out of surgery?”

“At least three hours or so…”

Mike studies the sight before him – that of his one and only son lying unconscious.

“I hate seeing him like this…” Mike says.

“So do I…” she says. “Where’s Carly?”

“Oh, she uh…she went home.”

“Did she? Funny, I…wouldn’t have thought she’d do that…”

“I don’t know,” Mike lies. “Maybe she was worried about Michael or something…”

“Of course,” Alexis says. “That makes sense…” She stares at him for a moment. “Oh, my goodness…”

“What?”

“I’m being incredibly obtuse,” she mutters as she steps around the chair. “You should be here with him for awhile…”

“Alexis,” Mike begins, “I’m sure that Sonny would rather see you sitting here when he wakes up…”

“You’re his father, Mike,” Alexis says. “You should be able to sit with him for awhile. Bobbie let me stay but I’m sure that she wouldn’t object to you taking my place…”

“Well…if you’re sure…”

“I’m sure,” she says. “Just…promise me that if he starts to regain consciousness…you’ll come get me. I want him to know that I’m here…”

“I promise,” Mike says.

“Good. I’ll uh…I’ll be outside in the waiting room…”

She walks past Mike and starts for the door.

“Alexis?”

She turns back around.

“Yes?”

“Thank you,” Mike says.

Alexis forces a smile.

“You’re welcome,” she says.

Alexis wanders out of the recovery room, not quite knowing what to do with herself and not quite comfortable being so far away from Sonny as he lies unconscious.

She walks the hospital corridor, headed for the waiting room. On the way, she spots Max standing at alert, ready for anything. Seeing him nearby makes her relax a little because she knows that he’ll keep Sonny safe.

The waiting room is empty when Alexis arrives, but the television is turned on.

Good, she thinks. This will give me something else to concentrate on…

Alexis sits on the sofa, her arms folded in front of her, leans back, and tries as hard as she can not to jump back up – not to run back to the recovery room to make sure that Sonny is alright.

Maybe I’ll go get something to eat…

The idea is quickly discarded, though. The cafeteria is much too far away from the recovery room. Besides, it probably isn’t even open yet.

Alexis takes a deep breath, exhales slowly, and looks up at the television set – trying to pass the time by watching the news program that’s playing.

“In local news, a car driven by reputed racketeer Michael “Sonny” Corinthos, Jr. crashed into a tree in the yard of Mr. And Mrs. Darren Daws of Port Charles. On hearing the crash, Mr. Daws ran out into his front yard, opened the car door, and discovered Corinthos slumped over the steering wheel - unconscious and bleeding profusely. Police sources say that Corinthos was the victim of multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. Corinthos is in General Hospital, where his condition after surgery is listed as stable…”

Alexis rolls her eyes in disgust.

“You didn’t have to announce to the world where he is…” she mutters.

“In a related case, New York State Police have positively identified the bodies of four men found shot to death on a deserted stretch of road approximately 30 miles outside of New York City. The men have been positively identified as Jerry O’Connell, age 27 or Poughkeepsie, Manuel “Manny” Quinones, age 38 of Little Falls, New Jersey, Victor Rocco, age 40 of Brooklyn, New York, and long-time Organization kingpin, Philip Lundine…”

Alexis’ brown eyes open wider at the mention of the name. She shoots to her feet and moves closer to the television, hanging on every word.

“Police are investigating a possible turf war between rival Organization factions…”

Alexis turns and heads back to the recovery room as quickly as she can. She stops when she sees Max.

“Max,” she begins quietly as she approaches, “watch out for Sonny. Don’t let anyone other than his father or me past this point, okay? From what I’m hearing on the news…I’m thinking that there might be some trouble…”

Max nods, knowing full well what she’s talking about – having heard the news about Lundine from other sources.

Alexis continues to the recovery room. When she gets to the room, she looks in and sees Mike sitting quietly in the chair beside Sonny’s bed. As she approaches, she can see that Sonny is still unconscious.

And still vulnerable.

“Mike?” she whispers as she places a hand on his shoulder.

“Yeah?”

Alexis motions him closer.

“What is it?” he asks as he stands up from the chair and moves next to her.

“It’s all over the news,” she whispers. “Phil Lundine is dead…”

“Where?” a surprised Mike asks. “How?”

“He and three other men were found on some road outside of New York City – shot to death. They’ve all been identified. Apparently the police are investigating the possibility of some kind of a turf war…”

“Well…I can’t say I’m sorry to hear about Lundine. This must mean that Sonny doesn’t have to worry about him anymore…”

“Maybe not Lundine but what if there are reprisals against Sonny because of what happened?”

“I hadn’t thought of that…”

“Now, I’ve already said something to Max. For now, the rest is up to us. We have to make sure that someone’s here looking out for Sonny every moment. We can’t leave him alone and unprotected…”

“Alexis,” Mike begins in his best voice of reason, “you know that Sonny wouldn’t want you involved…”

“And you know that there is absolutely nothing in the world that will make me leave him – especially not now…”

Just then, out of the corner of her eye, Alexis sees something move.

She moves around Mike and closer to the bed, Mike close behind.

I imagined it, her head tells her as she stares at Sonny - waiting.

But she didn’t imagine it.

Sonny moves again, in preparation for waking up from his long, long slumber.

“Sonny?” Alexis prompts urgently. “Sonny, open your eyes…”

She and Mike watch intently, virtually holding their collective breath as Sonny’s eyes begin to flutter.

“Open your eyes, Sonny,” she insists. “You’ve been asleep long enough. It’s time to wake up now…”

A few seconds later, Sonny’s eyes slowly open – his deep brown eyes visible for the first time in far-too-long.

He stares at Alexis for a moment – his brain catching up to what’s in front of his eyes.

He smiles a sleepy smile, his dimples instantly visible.

“Hey…” he manages in a hoarse whisper.

Alexis looks at him, a tear making its way out of her eye and onto her cheek.

She gingerly places her hand on top of his.

“Hey…” she manages.
