Chapter Nine

The elevator doors open and a weary Sonny steps out. He walks to his apartment and stops to talk to his bodyguard, Johnny.

"Hi, Boss," Johnny says.

"Everything quiet?"

"So far this morning."

"Miss Davis still inside?" Sonny asks.

"I haven't seen her this morning," Johnny says.

Sonny unlocks the door and walks into his apartment. The bright blue morning sky outside the window catches his eye. He takes off his jacket and drapes it on the back of the sofa. He takes his cell phone out of the inside pocket before heading up the stairs.

Sonny slowly opens the door to his bedroom and looks at his bed, where Alexis is still asleep. As he closes the door, he watches her sleeping soundly. He unbuttons the top two buttons of his shirt, puts his cell phone on the dresser, and walks around to the side of the bed where Alexis lay sleeping. He sits on the bed and silently watches her for a moment.

Alexis looks so peaceful, Sonny thinks as he watches her. He almost doesn't want to disturb her.

Almost.

"Alexis," Sonny says in a soft voice. He tenderly touches her cheek. "Alexis?" He brushes the hair out of her face. "Alexis..."

Finally her eyes open. She sees him sitting there next to her. She smiles at him sleepily.

"Good morning," Sonny says.

"Good morning." She looks at him and notices that he is staring at her. "Why are you staring at me?"

"Well, I kinda like it that you're...you know...in my bed."

She smiles.

"And it's a very comfortable bed, too. I didn't slide off or anything the entire night."

"Good," he says.

Alexis pulls herself up to a sitting position and leans back against the pillows.

"That's pretty," Sonny says, referring to the lacy slip that she's wearing.

"Normally I would be a little uncomfortable with that remark," she says.

He smiles.

"I know."

"I'm sure you do. You like to tease me, don't you?"

"A little," he admits. "You always get all flustered. It's cute."

"I draw the line at being thought of as cute."

"Well, I have other thoughts about you, too, you know...I'm sorry that I had to leave last night...Couldn't be helped."

"What happened?"

"Renaldo called."

"I remember that part," she says.

"Courtney and A.J. disappeared from the hospital."

"How?"

"A helicopter landed on the roof of General Hospital. The two bozos that I had watching them... well Courtney and A.J. slipped by them and...they were gone...I've been with Benny for the last few hours...trying to track 'em down, calling in markers..."

"What will you do?" Alexis asks.

"Get my sister away from A.J. Quartermaine."

"How will you find them?"

Sonny shrugs.

"Whatever it takes..."

"And what are you going to do when you do find them?"

"A.J. has nothing to worry about...as long as I get my sister back safe and sound."

"But what if she doesn't want to come back?"

"You're not helping me here, Alexis," he says as he stands and paces near the bed.

"I'm trying to. It's a very simple question. What if Courtney doesn't want to come back? Then what?"

"I know what's best for her in this situation," Sonny says. "I don't want Courtney to get hurt because of me. I'll get her away from A.J. -- and I'll deal with whatever comes after that..."

"I advise against it," she says.

"You do?"

"Yes, I do."

"And why is that?"

"If you force Courtney away from A.J. against her will, she will never stop trying to get back to him...and she will never trust you."

"So I'm supposed to stand by and let her be used by that bastard A.J.?"

"Sonny, all I'm saying is that..."

"You know what?" Sonny interrupts. "I don't wanna talk about this anymore. I've got my people out looking for them so...I just have to sit tight...and wait 'til I hear something..." He walks back over to the bed and sits. "I'm...kinda disappointed that...you know...we got...interrupted last night..."

She smiles.

"Kind of?"

"You know what I mean..."

"I do," she says. "And it took so long for me to get up enough nerve to come back..."

He looks into her eyes and touches her cheek.

"You don't have to be afraid, Alexis."

"I'm not afraid...exactly...I just didn't know if it was such a good idea to...make love...with my best friend..."

"Well, you know," Sonny begins, "making love with a best friend...can only make even better friends."

Sonny's mouth covers hers, taking her breath away.

Her hands come up and touch his face as their momentum pushes Alexis deeper into the pillows behind her. The scent of her sends Sonny's passions reeling. Alexis feels herself being pulled under once again.

Suddenly a shrill sound pierces the air and startles them both.

Their lips separate.

The sound happens again a second or two later. It's his cell phone... of course, they both tell themselves.

"Damn..." Sonny mutters. Reluctantly, he pulls himself away and stands. "I gotta...you know."

"I know."

He walks to the phone on his dresser, picks it up, and presses it to his ear.

"Yeah?" he says impatiently. "Que tal?"

Alexis catches the next words... Spanish words. She takes a deep breath and gets out of bed. She spots the dress that she was wearing the night before. It is neatly draped on the chair next to the bed. She remembers when she took it off. Actually, it was taken off for her.

She shakes her head and collects herself. She passes Sonny on the way to the bathroom and closes the door behind her.

Once inside, she takes a deep breath and exhales slowly. Honestly, you would think that two adults who want to be intimate would get the chance to do it, she thinks to herself. No. This is Sonny Corinthos and Alexis Davis that we're talking about here. Can't let them be alone for too long. Something might happen.

"Alexis?" Sonny calls.

"Yes"

"What do you want for breakfast?"

"I don't have time for breakfast," she answers. "I have to be in court at eleven."

"Not even a little time?"

"Not really. I have to get myself dressed and sort through my folders and organize my briefcase and...

"I get it, I get it. I'll wait for you downstairs."

"Okay."

Alexis walks down the stairs and into Sonny's living room. She sees Sonny standing at the window, glass of whiskey in his hand.

"A little early for a night cap?"

"Got a lot on my mind. Besides, this is the only way for me to relax since you know...we didn't..."

"And whose fault was that?" she teases.

"Mine," Sonny admits. He puts his glass down on the table and approaches her.

"It was all my fault. I accept full responsibility."

"Good."

"So," he begins as he drapes an arm around her shoulder, "can I have a raincheck for last night?"

"I'll have to think about it."

Sonny walks to the front door with her.

"I'll see you later," he says.

Their lips touch briefly.

"I'll see you later," Alexis repeats. "And keep me informed about the Courtney situation."

"I will."

"And please don't do anything without talking to me first."

"Alexis, it's being handled."

"I'm insisting."

"Alexis..."

"Sonny..."

He shrugs.

"I'll let you know."

"Before you do anything," she insists.

Sonny opens the door.

"I will let you know before I do anything."

"Good. Have a nice day," she says. "Good morning, Johnny."

"Miss Davis," Johnny says as Alexis walks past.

Early that evening, Alexis opens the door to her apartment, walks inside, flips on the light, and closes the door behind her.

She puts her briefcase in the chair by the door, kicks off her shoes, and walks to the sofa. She plops down and puts her feet up, her head back and closes her eyes.

What a grueling day it has been -- hours and hours at the courthouse and no end to the case yet in sight.

Just then, images of the previous several days flash in and out of her mind. Bright sunlight and blue water, gardenias, and the beach...Whispered words, tender touches, gentle kisses and not so gentle kisses.

And Sonny's bed!

They'd come so close to making love the night before.

She felt herself on Sonny's bed. Sonny's bed! She felt his hot breath on her neck, his soft lips teasing her neck and lips and face and his hands roaming over the surface of her body and she could smell the scent of him filling the air around her. Her mind and her heart were focused and she could feel herself falling deeper and deeper under the spell, wanting more and more.

And then his cell phone rang, as usual.

Of course now, with more distance, she's unsure -- again. What if it would have been a great big mistake anyway? What if their friendship is destroyed because of it?

What if he's not really over Carly and he's just turning to me now because I'm still around and there's no one else in his life right now, Alexis asks herself.

That's the most disturbing thought of all for Alexis, that she might only be a convenience for Sonny. She would hurt so much if it were true. All of the feelings that she has about Sonny... admiration for his strength, contempt for his viciousness in certain situations, anger at his intolerance and inconsistency, tenderness toward the sensitive and loyal friend, attraction for the part of herself that she sees in him... all of her feelings are real and run very deep.

To know that he was just biding his time by being with her would hurt like nothing else ever has. The idea that Carly could simply walk back into his life and put an end to what has gone on for the past week or so is a fear that Alexis carries each and every time that she's with Sonny.

Alexis lets out a sigh as she comes back to concentrate on the present.

There is a knock at the door and so she has to shake off the thoughts that she's having and answer it.

She stands and walks to the door and opens it.

She smiles.

"Well, if it isn't my favorite ex-husband," she says.

"Your only ex-husband," Jax answers.

"Come in."

Jax walks into the apartment and Alexis closes the door behind him.

"And to what do we owe the pleasure of this visit?" Alexis asks.

"Well, I was in your neighborhood and I thought that I'd drop by to say hello...make certain that you and Kristina are alright."

"Why wouldn't we be?"

Jax just looks at her.

"Oh wait," Alexis says. "Big, bad Sonny, right?"

"Alexis, you are living next door to a mobster."

"Can't you drop by without attacking my friends?"

"Sorry. Where's Kristina?"

Alexis shrugs.

"Probably out with Ned somewhere..."

"Oh, that's right," Jax says. "How are you handling that relationship?"

"What...Ned and Kristina? Well, it's weird. Very. But, it's really okay. I hardly ever think about it anymore. Kristina is more of what Ned needs in his life. I'm too headstrong, too dedicated to my practice and my clients, too unwilling to change..."

"One client in particular..."

Here we go again, she tells herself, deliberately saying nothing in response.

"You know," Jax begins, "maybe it's been so easy for you to accept Ned with Kristina because you've already moved on..."

There is a knock at the door.

"I'd love to answer you but there's someone at the door," she says.

She walks over to the front door and opens it.

There stands Kristina.

"I'm sorry, Alexis," she says as she walks into the apartment. "I forgot my keys and..."

"Good evening," Jax says.

"Hey!" she says before going over to Jax and hugging him. "What are you doing here?"

"Just passing through."

"I'm going to make some coffee," Alexis interrupts. "Feel free to discuss me behind my back."

She turns and disappears into the kitchen.

"What was that all about?" Kristina asks.

"I said the wrong thing, I guess."

"You mean about her and Sonny?"

"Alexis obviously has feelings for him. She's putting her life in danger, Kristina. Women are not safe around Sonny Corinthos."

"Well, I'm pretty sure that Sonny has feelings for Alexis, too."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because Alexis took off a few days, left a note and didn't say a word to anybody, just that she'd be back in a week. When Sonny found out that she was gone, he didn't like it one bit that he didn't know where she was. Then, a few days later, Alexis comes back home, looking all tan and healthy and relaxed, and when I saw Sonny, he looked a little tanned, too. And he's been looking at her differently for the past couple of days."

"Looking at her how?" Jax asks.

"You know," Kristina begins. "That look..."

Jax shakes his head.

"I hope you're wrong, Kristina."

"I don't think I am."

"Sonny destroys women," Jax says. "I'd hate to think that Alexis is the next one on his list."

"They're pretty tight, Jax. I don't think that Sonny would ever hurt Alexis, at least not intentionally."

"Intentions don't matter," he insists. "The carnage will be the same regardless of what Sonny's intentions are."

"And what did Alexis say when you told this to her?"

"I've been warning her about Corinthos for years. She won't listen."

"I'm coming back into the living room now!" Alexis calls from the kitchen. "You'll have to stop talking about me!" She walks back into the living room. "There now. Wasn't that fun? Would you like a cup of coffee, Jax?"

"Now, I know that you didn't like what I said earlier but..."

"Don't try to kill him, Alexis," Kristina teases.

"Very funny," she says.

There's another knock at the door.

"My, aren't we popular tonight," Alexis remarks.

Kristina opens the door and Sonny walks in.

"Hey, Kristina," he says as he walks into the apartment. "I need to speak with Alexis." He notices Jax. "You know, I don't wanna interrupt anything. I can come back..."

"You aren't interrupting anything," Alexis says.

"I have to be going anyway," Jax says.

"I'll walk you to the elevator," Kristina says.

"Goodnight, Alexis."

"Goodnight, Jax," Alexis calls as they walk towards the door.

"Sonny," Jax says as he passes.

"Jax."

Kristina opens the door and they walk outside.

"Hi," Alexis says.

"Hi, yourself," he says.

"Something happen with Courtney and A.J.?"

"Not yet but I wanted to keep you in the loop..." He moves closer. "When can I see you again?" he asks in a low voice.

"You're seeing me now."

"You know what I mean...privately."

"Well, I don't know. Why don't you extend an invitation and we'll take it from there."

"How about dinner tonight?"

"Dinner? Again? I'm going to be wearing that size 92 muumuu if you don't stop feeding me..."

"You can afford a couple of pounds."

"Are you saying that I'm too thin?"

"You uh...got something else in mind?"

"Dinner will be fine," she answers quickly.

"Good. I thought we could go to the No Name."

"That would be nice. Or we can go over some vendor contracts in your apartment. You can make dinner."

"We could do that."

Just then, Kristina walks back into the apartment.

"Would you like a drink, Sonny?" she asks.

"Uh, no thank you," he says, moving away from Alexis. "So about those contracts? Why don't you bring 'em over later and we can go over them. I'll make dinner."

"That's a great idea," Alexis says.

"In about an hour?" Sonny asks.

"An hour will be fine," Alexis says.

"Good," he says. He walks to the door. "Kristina."

"Sonny," Kristina says.

He opens the door and walks out.

"So...you're having dinner with Sonny? Again?"

"We're reviewing contracts, Kristina. You heard him. Besides which, Sonny is an excellent cook."

"Well, how was dinner yesterday?" Kristina asks.

"What do you mean 'how was dinner yesterday?' Dinner was dinner. He ate. I ate. That was about it."

"It just seems as if you've been spending a lot of time with Sonny the past couple of days..."

"Sonny is my client, Kristina. He is also my friend. We've had meals together before. I like to think that we will again, Satisfied."

"I notice that Sonny seems to have gotten a little sun, too..."

Oh, no, Alexis tells herself. I won't be falling into that conversation!

"I've got to go upstairs and quickly re-familiarize myself with those contracts before my meeting with Sonny."

"No need to run off, Alexis," Kristina says. "I have to meet Ned anyway. We're meeting with a singer about signing with L&B. I just came by to get my keys."

"Well then, you go to your meeting with Ned and I'll see you later."

"Okay," Kristina says. "Enjoy your dinner."

Alexis rolls her eyes.

"Thank you," she says.

She watches as Kristina picks up her keys from the desk, opens the door, and walks out, closing the door behind her.

Alexis picks up the shoes that she discarded near the desk and trudges up the stairs.

She sighs deeply.

"What am I getting myself into?"
