Chapter Six
“Just a minute,” Alexis calls out as she hurries to answer the knock at the door of her suite.
She opens the door and in front of her stands a smiling young man, wheeling a serving cart covered with brass covers of varying sizes.
“Buenos dias,” the young man says as he pushes the cart into Alexis’ room.
“Wait a minute,” she says. “I didn’t order anything to eat…”
“Si,” he says, smiling the smile of someone who doesn’t completely understand what’s being said to him.
“I did not order anything to eat!” Alexis insists as the smiling young man quickly checks his order book against what’s on the serving cart.
He holds out the order book and a pen for Alexis to sign.
“But…”
“Good morning,” Sonny says with a smile, walking through the open door.
“Oh, good,” she exclaims. “I’m glad you’re here. Can you explain to him that I didn’t order breakfast?”
“I did,” Sonny announces, taking the order book and pen from the young man and scribbling something on it. “Gracias.”
“De nada, senor,” the young man answers. He steps back and, still smiling, walks out the door and closes it behind him.
Alexis smiles.
“I should have known,” she says.
“I figured you might be hungry,” Sonny says.
“As a matter of fact, I am kind of hungry. What did you get?”
“Oh, scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, eggs florentine, bacon, sausage, toast…”
“What? No oatmeal?”
Sonny smiles.
“What kind would you like?”
She laughs.
“Never one to go half way…”
“Never,” Sonny says. “So, Ms. Davis, what will it be?”
“Actually, a really sinful pastry would be wonderful…”
“You’re kidding, right?”
“And coffee?”
“You couldn’t eat a healthy meal if your life depended on it, could you?”
“Please?”
He shakes his head and smiles.
“Have a seat,” he says.
“Thank you!”

Alexis walks out onto the patio, sipping at the last of the coffee in her cup and breathes in the wonderful moist sea air. She can feel it on her face and she can feel the heat of it against her clothes.
“Relaxed?” Sonny asks as he comes out to join her on the patio.
“I am,” she admits. “Thank you for breakfast, Sonny. It was very sweet of you.”
“Oh, I’m sweet alright but you hardly ate any of it…”
“Well,” she explains, “the truth is that…I’m still a little hyper from last night…”
“Yeah, me too,” he says. “Did you get any sleep?”
“Not really,” she says, putting her cup down on the serving cart nearby. “You?”
Sonny shakes his head no.
They smile at each other. They kiss gently, both of them becoming more and more accustomed to this new level of familiarity.
Sonny stares into Alexis’ eyes and his mind drifts for a brief second.
“What?” she asks.
“This feels…weird, you know?”
She nods.
“But it feels right,” he adds. “…With Carly – and I know you don’t wanna hear this…”
“Not really…”
“Bear with me for a minute, okay? I’m makin’ a point…”
“Okay,’ she says, reluctantly. “Go ahead…”
“When Carly and I got together…we started off on the wrong foot because we were betraying Jason. And no matter what happened after…it never felt completely right…This thing with us now…This started the right way, you know? Two people getting to know each other first, becoming friends, and then becoming part of each other’s life…I never realized how important you’ve become. If I’ve had a bad day, I go find Alexis. If I’ve had a good day and I wanna tell somebody about it, I go find Alexis. If I need advice – legal or personal – I go find Alexis. If I need to laugh, I go find Alexis…I don’t know when it all changed but…”
“By the way,” Alexis begins, “have I mentioned that…” She hesitates for a bit. “I love you...”
Sonny smiles.
“Every day,” he says, quietly. “Every time you deal with my moods and me yellin’ all the time and trying to bully you…You’re the only one I can’t bully, though.” He laughs. “I’ve tried it and…you just keep on coming…You know, if we had approached each other this way from the beginning, you wouldn’t know half of the things you know about me now. I wouldn’t want you to…As a matter of fact, part of me wishes that you didn’t know what you know…I haven’t exactly led…what you could call an exemplary life. A lot of it I’m ashamed of…A lot of things I would change if I could…but I can’t…Feeling about you the way I do now, I would never want you…to see those things – to know those things about me…But you do…And I gotta tell you somethin’. It feels good. You know everything there is to know about me – the good and the bad…and you love me anyway…That means a lot to me, Alexis…”
“I’ve told you before,” she begins as she moves a little closer to him, “you aren’t the only person who gets to be complicated…You know things about me, too – things that I couldn’t even tell Ned…when I believed that I loved him…more than I could ever love anyone…I didn’t tell him; I told you…I feel safe with you, Sonny…You make me feel as if I can be…me – the real Alexis…and not this paragon of legal expertise or…the fearless attorney…Just Alexis…I can cry…Do you know that I can probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of people in the world who have ever seen me cry? It’s always so easy with you…I don’t know when it happened, either…And I hate that Kristina said to you what she said to you. I hate it…but there is a part of me that is…glad she told you because…I don’t know if I ever would have been able to…”
He smiles.
“So maybe Kristina did a good thing after all,” he teases.
Alexis rolls her eyes.
“Let’s not get carried away…”
Sonny laughs.
“So…what do you want to do today?” he asks.
She shrugs.
“What do you suggest?”
“Well,” he begins, “I thought we could charter a boat and a crew…and spend the day on the water. What do you think?”
“That sounds lovely,” she says. “Can I have an hour?”
“Take as much time as you want,” he says as he heads for the door. “Only…”
“Only what?”
He opens the door.
“Don’t take too long,” he says.

Later that night – after their sail – Alexis walks to her room feeling Sonny close behind. She reminds herself to breathe as she walks. She reaches into her pocketbook and pulls out the key. She turns it in the lock and opens the door.
She turns around and comes face to face with the intense brown eyes, staring at her eyes, looking deeply into them.
“Would you like to come in?” she manages.
He shakes his head no.
“Better not,” he says.
“Oh…Right…One step at a time…”
“Takin’ it slow…” He stares at her mouth for a second and then looks back into her eyes. “I want you, Alexis – more than I did earlier today, more than I did last night…If I come in there with you…I won’t be able to walk away – not again…”
“I see,” she manages before breathing in and exhaling. “Well, I have to admit…I’m disappointed…”
He shakes his head and smiles.
“Don’t be,” he says. “When it does happen between us…it’ll be worth the wait…”
He takes a step forward, breaching that line of personal space once again, bringing his lips as close to hers as they can be without touching.
Their lips meet slowly, touching and teasing each other, their kisses no longer uncertain and afraid to explore but daring and ablaze with passion.
Reluctantly, the kiss ends.
Their eyes lock for moment.
“Goodnight,” Sonny whispers.
“…Goodnight,” she manages.
He waits and watches as Alexis walks into her room and slowly closes the door.
Sonny stands in place for a moment longer, remembering the feeling of her lips against his, the softness of her skin. He breathes deeply and exhales.
He shakes his head and laughs to himself.
“It’ll definitely be worth the wait…”
