Chapter Three

Sonny puts his glass down on the desk near the front door and pulls it open.

“I’ll be next door,” he tells Johnny as he walks past and over to Alexis’ apartment door. He knocks and waits for no more than a second or so before knocking again. As he raises his hand to knock again, the door opens and Kristina is standing in front of him.

“Sonny,” she says. “It’s kind of late. Can I help you with something?”

“I need to speak to Alexis,” he says as he walks past her into the apartment and into the living room.

“Alexis has gone to bed – or so she says,” she mutters before closing the door. “She’s got a headache.”

“It’ll only take a minute.”

“Sonny, Alexis is not in the mood to see or speak to anyone right now…”

Sonny studies Kristina for a moment.

“What’s wrong with you?” he asks.

“Nothing,” she lies.

“What?”

Kristina drags into the living room and over to the fireplace.

“She is really angry with me…”

“What about?”

“You know,” Kristina says. “About what I said to you that day…”

“Oh, yeah. That’s right,” Sonny says, teasingly. “So she found out?”

“Yeah, she found out…You know, I came here to Port Charles so that I could meet my sister. I wanted to come here and get to know my big sister and I wanted us to be best friends.”

“I thought that’s what you were…”

“We were,” Kristina says. “Until I ruined everything between us. First Ned and then I said what I said to you…I don’t know if she’ll ever be able to forgive me…”

Sonny shrugs.

“She will – sooner or later.”

“How do you know?”

“Because,” he begins before sitting down on the sofa, “she really cares about you. You see, Kristina, there’s a reason why Alexis and me are friends.”

“I,” she corrects. “Alexis and I…”

“Whatever,” he dismisses. “See, we’re a lot alike. We both like our lives to be steady and orderly and predictable…and private. Now, I don’t think that getting involved with your sister’s ex was the smartest move that you could have made, but I won’t go into that. Besides, I don’t know what either of you sees in Ashton anyway. But you went behind Alexis’ back and came to me and…said what you said about her…You violated her privacy, Kristina.”

“I know that,” she says. “But I didn’t mean to blurt that out, Sonny. I was just so mad at you for yelling at her…”

“I yelled at her because she told Courtney something that I told her in confidence. Now…I’m not saying that I was right to do that. All I’m saying is that she’s giving you a hard time because you did the same thing to her…”

“But she’ll never trust me again.”

“Yes, she will. It’s just gonna take a little time, that’s all.”

“Do you really think so…or are you just trying to get rid of me?”

“I really think so,” Sonny says, “and…I’m trying to get rid of you…”

Kristina laughs.

“Thank you, Sonny,” she says.

“You’re welcome. Now,” he says before standing, “I really need to speak to Alexis.”

“I told you. She went upstairs to bed…and she’s really in a mood. I wouldn’t bother her right now if I were you…”

Sonny smiles and walks to the foot of the stairs.

“I’ll take my chances,” he says.

Kristina shakes her head and shrugs.

“It’s your funeral,” she says. She joins Sonny at the base of the stairs. “Alexis!” she calls.

“I’m asleep!” Alexis yells back.

“There’s someone here to see you!”

“Tell them to go away!”

“I’m not leaving, Alexis,” Sonny calls.

“Go home, Sonny!”

“We need to talk. Can you come down here for a minute?”

The sound of stomping can be heard coming from upstairs. Alexis appears at the top of the stairs in a pair of silk pajamas.

“It is late, Sonny,” she manages through gritted teeth. “Besides, there’s nothing for us to talk about!”

“Okay,” Sonny says. “If you don’t wanna come down, I can always come up there…”

Alexis glares at him, knowing that he’ll do just that. She rolls her eyes.

“Fine!” she says as she comes down the stairs. “Satisfied?”

“Yeah, kinda,” he says. “By the way…nice pajamas…”

She glares at him once again.

“Can you excuse us, Kristina?” Alexis says.

“Certainly,” she says, amused. “Goodnight, Sonny and…thanks again.”

He smiles at her.

“Goodnight,” he says.

Kristina walks up the stairs and out of sight.

“So, what’s so important that you had to get me out of a warm bed?”

“Us,” he says before walking over to sit on the sofa.

“Us?”

“Yeah.” He sits. “First of all, nothing happened with Carly and me. I want you to know that.”

“And I’ve told you that, beyond the terms of your divorce agreement with her, your relationship with Carly is none of my business. Why are you, all of a sudden, explaining yourself to me?”

“Damned if I know,” he says. “I feel like I need to – for some reason…”

“Well, you don’t,” she says.

“So I won’t…I don’t want you to quit, Alexis.”

“We’ve been through all of this before,” she says. “Why – because everyone else has left you and I’m the last one standing?”

“Yes. I mean – no. I mean…” He takes a deep breath and stands to face her. “You mean too much to me for me to just let you walk out.”

Alexis is intrigued.

“In what way?” she asks.

“In every way,” he answers. “You’ve been there whenever I’ve needed you – whether it was because I was being harassed by the cops or trying to handle a labor situation or I was being set up – whatever. You’ve always been there – fighting for me, watching my back…I don’t know what I would have done without you these last couple of years…Like I told you the last time we had this conversation…I don’t trust many people…I trust you, Alexis, and I depend on you…You can’t leave. You can’t…”

Good ol’ dependable Alexis, she thinks to herself.

“Well,” she begins, sadly, “I’m sorry, Sonny, but you don’t get to decide this one. Now, as I said earlier, I will stay on as your attorney until you find someone else but…I am leaving. End of story. Now…I’ve got a splitting headache and I need to get some sleep…Please leave?”

Sonny looks at her for a moment before walking to the door. He puts his hand on the handle and opens the door. He turns back toward her and looks into her eyes.

“We’re not finished,” he says before walking out the door and closing it behind him.

Alexis takes a deep breath and drifts over to the window.

She stares out for a moment or two. Sonny needs her. Sonny depends on her. What about love? Nope. That was never mentioned. Kristina needs her. Kristina depends on her. Kristina loves Ned. Ned loves Kristina. Ned loved Alexis. Alexis loves…

A powerful urge to flee comes over her. She’s tired. She’s tired of being there for everybody else, tired of being good ol’ dependable Alexis. She needs to be there for herself at this time in her life – by herself. She needs distance and space so that she can clear her head. Everything and everyone in Port Charles will just have to wait until she gets back.

Alexis descends the stairs in her home, fully dressed and carrying a small suitcase. She quietly walks over to the desk and leaves a note propped against the telephone. She gently opens the door and closes it behind her.
