Chapter One

Sonny and Carly are standing in his living room, sipping from their drinks, sharing a close moment. Just then there’s a quick knock at the front door. Before Sonny can answer the knock, the door opens.

“Miss Davis,” Renaldo announces as he swings open the door.

“Thank you,” Alexis says as she saunters into the apartment, carrying a folder in her hands. She stops cold when she sees what she has walked in on between Carly and Sonny.

“Perfect,” Carly mutters sarcastically.

“I’m…I’m sorry,” Alexis stammers. “I don’t mean to interrupt anything…”

“No, no,” Sonny begins as he approaches her, drink in hand. “It’s okay. What’s up?”

“I just…I wanted to catch you so that you can look over these contracts…”

She hands him the folder and he catches her eye for a brief second before she looks past him. Instinctively he knows hat something is wrong.

“I’ll go over them and get them back to you a little later. Okay?”

“Fine,” Alexis manages. She backs up toward the door. “You can drop them off later…”

“Alexis,” Carly begins, “Sonny’s got more important things to think about right now besides your latest non-existent crisis…”

“Carly,” Sonny calmly scolds. He turns back to Alexis. “You okay?”

“I’m fine,” Alexis insists. “Again I’m…sorry that I barged in…”

“So then leave,” Carly says.

“I’ll…talk to you later,” Alexis manages quietly before turning around and walking through the open door before Renaldo closes it.

“Good,” Carly mutters. “Does she ever leave you alone?”

“Alexis is my friend, Carly,” Sonny says, still thinking about her.

“That’s only because that’s all she can get from you…”

Sonny turns to face her and stares for a moment.

“We’re friends, Carly…You’ve never understood that, have you?”

“What I understand is that she practically throws herself at you every chance she gets. I made a mistake and she jumped on it. You’re the one that doesn’t get it, Sonny.”

Sonny laughs to himself and shakes his head.

“I guess it was time for a reality check, huh?”

“Excuse me?”

“I’ve got a few things to take care of,” Sonny says. “Can I have Renaldo or Max take you home?”

Carly glares at him.

“I can get home by myself!” she says, fuming. She slams her glass down on the bar. She stomps to the front door and picks up her pocketbook on the way. “Chalk up another one for the neurotic attorney!”

She grabs the doorknob and jerks the door open before storming out, slamming the door behind her.

Sonny stands staring out of the window – waiting. He’d knocked on Alexis’ door twice already and there was no answer. Even her annoying kid sister wasn’t at home. The longer he waits, the more he worries about Alexis.

When he’d looked into her eyes earlier, what he saw there concerned him. She had clearly been flustered – as if she had walked in on some intimate scene between him and Carly. And she might have been right. It might very well have turned into just that if she hadn’t shown up. After all, Carly knows A.J. Quartermaine about as well as anyone could and she hates him almost as much as Sonny does. Carly understands how important it is to keep A.J. away from Courtney – before she gets hurled through a windshield or thrown down a flight of stairs or worse. Their mutual hatred of A.J. Quartermaine and their mutual love for little Michael are two things that will forever keep alive a connection between Sonny and Carly.

Still, Sonny doesn’t like the look that he saw in Alexis’ eyes. Something is wrong with her and has been ever since the night of Carly’s club opening. He hasn’t had a chance to ask Alexis about it yet but he intends to when he sees her.

Only where is she?

Sonny stands at the fireplace with a drink in his hand when there’s a quick knock at the door and he comes to attention.

“Yeah?” he calls.

Renaldo swings the door open and Alexis walks through it.

“I got your message,” she says. “You wanted to see me?”

“Yeah,” Sonny says. He puts down his glass, walks over to the desk and picks up the folder that she left earlier. “I wanted to get those contracts back to you.”

“Everything looks okay? You don’t have any questions?”

“Nope,” he says. “Everything’s fine.”

“Good,” she says. She takes the folder from him. “I’ll get them to their lawyer tomorrow.”

“Thanks.”

“Well…goodnight.”

“Alexis?”

“Yes?”

“I came by a couple of times…”

“Oh, I had to…take care of a couple of things for one of my other clients. It ended up taking longer than expected.”

“I see,” Sonny says. “Are you okay? You seemed…jittery earlier…”

“I’m fine,” she insists. “Actually…I wanted to talk to you about something…”

“What’s that?”

“Well…I’ve reconsidered it and…I think that I will move after all…”

“Okay Alexis, what’s wrong?”

“I just think that it will be better for everyone all the way around…if I simply move out…And also…I think that it would be best if…I resign as your attorney.”

“Resign?” Sonny repeats, stunned. “Why? Have I done something wrong?”

“Of course, I’ll stay on as your attorney until you can find someone else to represent you. I…I can recommend a few attorneys, if you like…”

“Alexis,” he interrupts, “if I’ve done something or not done something or said something to upset you, you’ve…you’ve gotta at least tell me what it is – give me the chance to make it right…Why are you doing this?”

She thinks about it for a moment.

“Because it’s time,” she says.

Before Sonny can say another word, Alexis opens the door and leaves, quietly closing the door behind her.
