Chapter Twelve

Sonny emerges from his apartment and lets the door close behind him. He walks to the elevator, Johnny silently following behind.

As Sonny presses the button for the elevator, he can’t help glancing over at the apartment next door. He stands there, looking at the door and reflecting on the past couple of weeks. The thoughts make him smile.

The elevator arrives at the penthouse floor. The doors open and out bounces Alexis’ red-haired kid sister, Kristina.

“Sonny?” she says as she steps out of the elevator.

“Morning, Kristina,” he answers.

He steps in, followed by Johnny. Kristina holds the door open.

“Can I talk to you about something?” Kristina asks.

“I’m kinda on my way somewhere…”

“It’ll only take a minute.”

“You’re gonna have to make it quick,” he says as he steps back out of the elevator.

Kristina watches as Johnny follows.

“It’s private,” she adds.

“Well, there’s nobody else here…”

“I know but…can we go into your apartment?”

Sonny smiles and walks to his door.

“You don’t want Alexis to know, right?”

“Well…no.”

Sonny unlocks the door and opens it.

“Come on in,” he says.

“Thanks,” Kristina answers and walks into the apartment past a waiting Sonny.

He closes the door.

“So?” he asks. “What can I do for you?”

“Sonny,” Kristina begins, “…just what are your intentions towards my sister?”

He laughs.

“My intentions?”

“Yes, your intentions. I mean, you and Alexis…well you’re obviously close. I just want to know where it’s leading.”

“Okay, in the first place, Alexis and I are friends. I respect her and I will do anything in my power to protect her and to make sure that she’s always safe. Now, aside from that – which I only told you because you’re Alexis’ sister and I know that you care about her…my relationship with Alexis is none of your business.”

“My sister is my business, Sonny,” Kristina insists. “I have every right to make sure that she’s okay.”

“Alexis wouldn’t think so. And you know it. That’s why you’re hiding in my apartment instead of…having this conversation outside in the hall where Alexis can hear you.”

“I don’t see what that has to do with anything…”

“You want to ask your questions behind closed doors because you know that Alexis won’t like you sticking your nose into things that don’t concern you…and neither do I.”

Sonny walks to the door and opens it.

“So I’m dismissed, is that it?” Kristina asks.

“Like I said before,” he patiently explains, “I was on my way out.”

She walks past him, shaking her head.

“Honestly, I don’t know how Alexis puts up with you…”

Sonny closes the door and follows her as far as the elevator.

“Goodbye, Kristina.”

She turns back to face him.

“Just don’t hurt my sister,” Kristina says.

He presses the elevator button.

“Have a nice day,” he says.

___________________________________________________________

Sonny sits at the desk in his office at the warehouse, finishing up the payroll checks. For the fourth time this afternoon, his mind wanders and he finds himself staring off into space.

Alexis. Thoughts of her keep popping into his mind. The more that he tries to concentrate and not to think of her, the more the thoughts come to him.

Making love with her was an incredible experience. They had a couple of near misses but, when it did finally happen, it was well worth the wait – just as he knew it would be.

Sonny smiles when he thinks about Alexis. As he told her that morning, she always comes across as the indestructible lady lawyer – always calm and in control. Only a very select few know what’s going on deep down inside.

She let me in, he remembers. She let me know her and she made it feel safe for me to let her know me. I don’t know how that happened but, pretty much before I knew what was happening, I was telling her things about me – things that had always been hard for me to share. All of a sudden, it wasn’t so hard anymore.

And I told her that I loved her.

He shakes his head in disbelief.

The women that he’d loved before had to fight so hard to get him to say those words to them – I love you. Love is such a scary emotion. It leaves you unprotected – standing there out in the open, unable to defend yourself in case someone decides to rip out your heart.

I always ran away, Sonny remembers, or I would say something else – anything else. But I would never use the word love. And even when I did, it took a long, long time before I could force the words out of my mouth.

Not true with Alexis.

He looked into her eyes just before they made love that first time and somehow wanted her to know. He wasn’t afraid or nervous. He didn’t want to run away. He didn’t try to find another word to use instead.

I said that I loved you.

And you said that you loved me, too.

Even now as Sonny thinks back, he knows that what happened between them wasn’t a mistake.

Just then the door opens and Sonny’s attention comes rushing back.

Into his office walks Mr. Perfect – Jasper Jacks the Candy Boy.

“I’m busy, Jax,” Sonny dismisses.

“I just need a moment of your time, Sonny,” he says.

“Fine,” Sonny says. “What about?”

Jax comes to stand in front of the desk.

“Helena Cassadine is on the loose,” he says. “Apparently she got away from the Port Charles Police Department…”

Sonny shrugs.

“That’s not so hard,” he says. “All you need to do is tell one of ‘em that his shoelace is untied and you’ve outsmarted that police department…”

“Well, be that as it may…it leaves Kristina and Alexis in danger…I just came from Alexis’ apartment. I tried to convince her and Kristina to come sailing with me until Helena is back in custody but Alexis refused. I assume that she wants to be available for you.”

“What’s your point?”

“The point is that Alexis continually aligns herself with you and defends you and you and I both know that she’s making the mistake of her life…”

“I still haven’t heard your point, Jax.”

“Well, I would think that it would be obvious. I’m counting on you to make certain they’re safe.”

“Of course,” Sonny says. “I will see to it that there’s a guard on both of ‘em until Helena Cassadine uh…finds her way back to the PCPD…Anything else?”

“No,” Jax answers. “That’s about it.”

Jax turns to leave.

“You uh…you always do that?” Sonny asks.

“Do what?” he asks as he turns back to face Sonny.

“Complain to Alexis about what a mistake she’s making by being my…my attorney…and my friend?”

“It is the truth, isn’t it?” Jax asks. “She’s putting herself in danger by being around you – keeping herself available for you at the expense of her own safety.”

“I know that you’re the self-appointed protector of all the women in the world but…Alexis doesn’t need your protection, Jax.”

“Hey,” Jax begins, “I was married to the lady. I will always care about her.”

“Well, caring is good. But Alexis is entitled to make her own decisions and choose her own friends.”

“Even if the decision is misguided and the friend will get her killed?”

“Why don’t you just…get off her back?”

“Look Sonny, there’s no way that we’ll ever agree on this…You just make sure that she and Kristina are safe.”

“Not a problem,” he says. “Uh, see you around, Jasper.”

________________________________________________________________________

Alexis opens the door to her apartment and feels relieved to be back home at long last after a grueling day of running around, filing briefs and presiding over depositions. She puts her keys on the desk, her attaché case in the chair, takes off her coat. She takes off her jacket, drapes it over the back of the chair, and makes her way to the sofa.
She plops down, puts her feet up, and enjoys the calm.

For a moment.

A knock at the door startles her.

She stands, walks to the door, and opens it, and is instantly uneasy.

“Alexis,” Ned says.

“You sound surprised,” she responds. “I do live here, you know.”

“I know. I just…Is Kristina here?”

“I don’t think so,” Alexis answers.

“We’re supposed to be going to dinner…”

“Ned,” she begins, “why don’t you just come in and wait for her? If she’s supposed to meet you, I’m sure that she’ll be here any moment. She’s probably just running a little late.”

Ned steps into the apartment.

“Thanks,” he says.

Alexis closes the door.

“Would you like a drink or something?” she asks.

“No, thank you…You just getting home?”

She nods.

‘Busy day,” she says.

“Apparently…You should come out with us.”

“I…don’t think so.”

“I mean, you look like you could use a chance to unwind…”

“Thank you.”

“You know what I mean…”

“Yes, I know what you mean,” Alexis says. “I don’t particularly feel like going out. Thank you anyway.”

“Oh, that’s right,” he says. “You probably have other plans…With Sonny…”

Alexis is startled.

“Now, why would I have plans with Sonny?”

“Oh, come on, Alexis. I know how you feel about him…”

“You know what Kristina told you.”

“Are you saying that she’s wrong?”

“I’m not saying anything…”

“Look, I know that I said that I wouldn’t worry about you but…You can’t be serious.”

“And what does that mean?”

“You can not waste your life with Sonny Corinthos!”

Alexis rolls her eyes.

Here we go again, she thinks.

___________________________________________________________

Sonny hangs up the phone as the front door opens and in steps Mike.

“What do you want, Mike?” Sonny asks, impatiently.

“Any word on where Courtney is?” he asks.

“Benny has Courtney and AJ traced to someplace in the Caribbean. When I know something more, I’ll let you know.”

“This not knowing where she is…It’s killing me…”

“Well, like I said. When I know something, I’ll tell you, Mike.”

Sonny goes to the front door.

“Sonny…”

“In a minute,” he says as he walks out.

He walks past Max and over to Alexis’ door for the third time this evening. He raises his hand, about to knock when he hears voices inside – loud voices.

“Alexis, Sonny is bad news. How can you not know that?”

Sonny recognizes that voice. Ned Ashton. I never liked him, Sonny reminds himself.

“Ned, Sonny is my…my friend,” Alexis says. “Not to mention that he is also my client. I am not about to…”

“But you’re destroying your practice and your reputation. Before long, people are only going to see you as a mob mouthpiece.”

“I am not a mob mouthpiece! I represent my client’s interests. And, contrary to what you like to believe, Sonny does have legitimate interests. I wish that you would stop accusing me of…of what?”

“Alexis,” Ned begins, “I’m not accusing you of anything. I’m just worried about you – worried what you’re doing to your reputation by representing Sonny and getting sucked in deeper and deeper…You’re better than that, Alexis! You used to be the smartest woman I knew…”

Sonny shakes his head and seethes, fighting to keep from kicking the door down. Instead, he turns and walks back to his apartment.

Once inside, he slams the door as hard as he can.

Mike is startled.

“What is it?” he asks.

“Ashton,” Sonny fumes. “I mean, she ran away from him. When is he gonna figure out that she doesn’t want him?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Ashton,” Sonny repeats. “He’s over there, giving Alexis a hard time.”

“What about?”

“What else?”

“Oh,” Mike says. “Well…he was engaged to her once…”

“Right – until she realized, you know…what a mistake that would’ve been…And he’s never gonna let her forget it.”

“What – that she ran away from the ceremony?”

“He’s gonna use that ‘til he gets what he wants…”

“Well, I don’t think he’s gonna get very far,” Mike offers. “I mean, they broke up a long time ago. I don’t think Alexis cares what Ned thinks anymore…”

“You don’t know Alexis like I do, Mike,” Sonny says. “She still feels guilty about leaving him at the altar and, you know…he uses it to get to her…I’ve really had it with him…”

Mike watches him silently for a moment.

“You uh…you sound pretty protective of her…”

“She’s my friend, Mike.”

“It’s just that I know that you two are close and…”

“Do me a favor and don’t say another word…”

“I’m only asking because I care, Michael.”

“Right. And where was all of this caring when Deke was beating on me and my mother? Where were you then? I tell you where you were -- nowhere to be found. It’s too late to make up for it now.”

“Michael, I just…”

“Go home, Mike,” Sonny tells him.

Reluctantly, Mike walks to the door.

“You’ll never forgive me for not telling you about Courtney…will you?”

“Well, I could but, you know…what’s the point ‘cause there’ll be something else right behind it…”

“I’m sorry that I’m not perfect, Michael.”

“Oh, you’re perfect, Mike,” Sonny says. “Just not in a good way…”

“Fine,” he says. “Let me know when you find Courtney…”

“Just go home,” Sonny says.

Mike opens the door and leaves, closing the door behind him. A restless Sonny walks to the bar, pours himself a large glass of scotch, and drinks it down – feeling the heat snaking its way down his throat.

He wanders over to the window, trying to keep his anger under control. He’s trying not to march into Alexis’ living room while Ned is there. He feels enough anger to know that it won’t end well if he confronts Ashton in Alexis’ living room. But he knows that he has to let Alexis handle things herself – her way.

Suddenly he hears a door slam shut. He puts his glass down on the dining table and walks to the front door. He opens it just as the elevator doors close. He steps out of his apartment and walks to Alexis’ door. He knocks firmly and waits for no more than a moment before the door opens and there before him stands Alexis, ready to stand and fight.

“Oh,” Alexis says. “It’s you…”

“Hey,” he says. “You okay?”

She takes a deep breath and walks into the living room.

“Wonderful. And you?”

Sonny follows her into the living room of her apartment, leaving the front door open.

“Well, I was a little worried about you…”

“You heard…”

“Yeah,” Sonny says. “What I don’t get…is why you always let him get to you.”

“He doesn’t get to me,” she insists.

“Sure he does. He looks at you and…gets you feeling all guilty…”

“I don’t feel guilty,” Alexis insists.

“Yeah, you do,” Sonny says. “You had the good sense not to marry the guy…and he can’t stand that…”

“Well, I did sort of leave him at the altar…”

“That’s true and…whenever he wants you to do something…he reminds you…”

Alexis shakes her head.

“That’s not true.”

“Then why are you so upset?”

“I’m not upset…”

“Look,” he says as he approaches her, “Ned knows…that he blew it when he lost you…and I don’t think that he’s…completely given up on you yet…”

“Then why is he with Kristina?”

“Can you think of a better way to get your attention than to…turn around and get involved with your little sister?” He reaches for her hands and gently pulls her to him. “You made the right decision when you ran away, Alexis.” He leans toward her and kisses her lips. “After all, if you hadn’t run away from Ned…we wouldn’t be where we are right now…”

Alexis looks into his eyes.

Their lips meet again and again. Then they kiss deeply – once, twice, and again. Sonny feels her lips touching his and that now familiar sensation begins to take him over – the need to make love to her.

“Oh, my God…”

Their lips quickly separate.

Their heads turn toward the source of the voice.

It’s Carly.

Sonny looks at the floor and shakes his head, telling himself that he knows what’s coming next.

“I don’t believe this,” Carly continues. “Then again, maybe I should believe it. I knew that this was happening all along! Miss Goody-Two-Shoes Alexis Davis couldn’t wait for me to move out before she came after you – just waiting in the wings until the coast was clear and she could make her move…”

“Carly,” Alexis cautiously begins, “this is not…”

“You bitch!”

“Shut up!” Sonny yells. “You know what? Enough…”

He walks to Carly and grabs her by the arm.

“Come on,” he says.

“Let me go!” Carly insists.

She struggles to get free but Sonny’s grip on her arm is too strong.

He pulls her to the doorway to Alexis’ apartment, and across the hall to his own apartment. Alexis rushes over to the door and closes it. Max opens the door to Sonny’s apartment. Sonny pulls her along until they are both inside.

He lets her go and closes the door.

“You’ve got some nerve,” Carly says.

“That’s enough,” Sonny insists.

“Oh, you’re getting it on with your lawyer and you’re gonna try and tell me what to do?”

“Well, somebody needs to since you can’t…seem to do the right thing by yourself.”

“I don’t want that woman anywhere near Michael!”

“Okay,” Sonny begins. “First of all, Carly, we are divorced. What I do and who I spend my time with is none of your business. In the second place, I’m not gonna try to explain my relationship with Alexis to you or anybody else. And don’t use Michael as a pawn to try to control my life and what I do.”

“My God, Sonny. Don’t you realize what she’s trying to do? That bitch…”

“And that’s another thing,” he interrupts. “I don’t ever wanna hear you use that word to Alexis again. You got a problem with me, you take it up with me and you leave Alexis out of it. Now, if that’s not acceptable, you know…then you can stay away from the penthouse altogether. Are we clear?”

Carly glares at him.

“Crystal clear!”

She walks to the door and swings it open, letting it hit against the wall behind it. She stomps over to the elevator and pounds the button with her hand.

Just then, the elevator doors open.

Kristina starts to walk out when Carly roughly brushes past her into the elevator. As Kristina steps out, Carly pushes the button for the first floor. Kristina stands at the elevator, staring in disbelief as the doors close.

She shakes her head and moves to the door to Alexis’ apartment. She takes out her keys and unlocks the door.

She opens the door and sees Alexis standing quietly next to the fireplace.

“What’s wrong?” Kristina asks as she closes the door.

“Nothing.”

“That ex-wife of Sonny’s nearly knocked me down just now. I mean, she looked like she was breathing fire!”

“She’s not the only one,” Alexis mutters.

There is a quick knock at the door before it opens and Sonny walks in.

“You alright?” he asks Alexis.

“Not really…”

“I’m…sorry about Carly and the stuff she says to you…”

“It’s not your fault,” Alexis says.

“I should’ve known,” Kristina says. “You know what, Sonny? You should get things straightened out with Carly once and for all before you drag my sister into the middle of it!”

“Kristina…”

“I wasn’t talking to you, Kristina!” Sonny says abruptly. “What’s goin’ on here is between me and Alexis -- no one else.”

“Alexis doesn’t need to have Carly dumping on her because of you.”

“Stop it!” Alexis yells. “Both of you just stop it!”

She runs up the stairs to her bedroom and slams the door shut.

Kristina opens her mouth to say something but before she can, Sonny walks to the door, opens it, and walks out into the hall, slamming the door behind him.

________________________________________________________________________

Alexis walks down the stairs into the living room as Kristina hangs up the telephone.

“Hey,” Kristina says. “You’re up.”

“I’m up,” Alexis repeats.

“Listen…I want to apologize for what happened earlier and I swear that I’m going to figure out how to keep my mouth shut sometimes. Okay?”

Alexis smiles at her.

“That would be nice,” she says. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I was supposed to be going out with Ned tonight…but I think I’d rather spend the evening with my beautiful big sister.”

Alexis shrugs.

“Doing what?”

“How about we go out?”

“Oh, I don’t really want to go out, Kristina…”

“Alexis, you need to get out of this apartment. You need to go out and have some fun for a change. And after the day you were having when I got home…”

“Well,” Alexis begins, “it was pretty awful…”

“I could see that. So we’ll go out and have a few drinks and listen to some music…What do you say?”

Alexis shakes her head as she thinks about it.

“Fine,” she says. “But I have to get dressed first.”

“So get dressed,” Kristina says. “I’ll wait here. You’ll see. It’ll be fun!”

___________________________________________________________

Alexis reluctantly follows Kristina into Luke Spencer’s club. Once inside, the two women stand and survey the place and the people in it.

“Well, if it isn’t Natasha – my favorite Cassadine!” Luke says.

Alexis rolls her eyes and takes a deep breath.

“Well, if it isn’t my least favorite…everything.”

“Now now, Natasha,” Luke says. “People are gonna think that you don’t like me.”

“I don’t.”

“Bet you say that to all the club owners,” he teases. He turns to Kristina and extends his hand. “And who might this lovely young lady be?”

Kristina shakes his hand and smiles.

“Well, thank you,” she says. “I’m Kristina – Alexis’ sister.”

“Really? I’d heard that there was another beautiful Cassadine in town.”

“Don’t fall for the sweet talk,” Alexis tells Kristina. “The man is unbearable.”

Luke shakes his head and smiles at Kristina.

“She really loves me,” he says. “Can I show you ladies to a table?”

“No!” Alexis blurts out.

“Yes,” Kristina corrects. “Thank you.”

“Well,” Luke begins as he grabs two menus, “just follow me!”

Kristina follows Luke to a table on the side. He puts the menus on the table and holds out a chair for Kristina to sit in.

Kristina sits.

“This is a nice spot,” she says.

“Thought you’d appreciate a table that lets you keep your back to the wall…”

“Thank you very much,” Alexis says before pulling out a chair and sitting.

Luke laughs.

“Oh, anytime, darlin’. Just holler if you need anything,” he says.

“What’s with him?” Kristina asks as Luke disappears into the crowd.

“Luke’s a maniac.”

“Oh. So that’s the famous Luke Spencer, huh?”

“That’s him…and infamous is more like it.”

Kristina smiles.

“That’s what I’ve heard…”

Just then a young man carrying a tray with two drinks on it finds his way to the table.

“Compliments of the house,” he says.

“Well, isn’t that nice?” Kristina says as he puts the drinks down in front of them.

“I worry when Luke is nice,” Alexis says.

“Oh, relax,” Kristina tells her. “Just enjoy it!”

Alexis picks up her glass and has a healthy sip of her drink.

What the hell am I doing here, she asks herself.

She looks around and sees Jax approaching. She looks past him and notices Skye Quartermaine at a table.

“Well, good evening!” Jax says.

“Good evening to you, too,” Kristina says. “I see you’re out for a night of fun, too.”

“It is nice to get out and about every now and then,” he says.

“That’s what I was just telling Alexis.”

“Who is sitting right here, perfectly capable of speaking for herself,” Alexis says. “Hi.”

“Hi,” Jax responds. “I’m surprised to see you here.”

“It was Kristina’s idea.”

“She needed a night out,” Kristina says.

“I see.”

Alexis looks over at Skye and smiles at Jax.

“Have a nice evening,” she says.

He laughs.

“Same to you,” he says.

Jax leaves them and makes his way back over to his table.

“Jax is out with Skye Quartermaine,” Alexis notes.

“I thought that was her. You think it’s serious?”

“It could be,” Alexis says. “Oh well. I hope that he doesn’t regret it later.”

“So do I,” Kristina says.

“Hello, ladies.”

Alexis tenses as she recognizes the voice. She looks up and sees Ned standing at the table.

She puts down her glass.

“Excuse me,” she says.

Ned and Kristina watch as she stands and moves through the crowd, in the direction of the ladies room.

“What was that all about?” Kristina asks.

“I told you on the phone,” Ned says. “We had an argument.”

“About Sonny?”

“About Sonny.”

“Well, of course you had an argument,” Kristina says. “You know how Alexis feels about him, Ned.”

“I just hate seeing her being destroyed by him…”

“Look, get lost, okay? Go have a drink or something. You’re going to make Alexis want to go home and she needs a night out.”

“I know, I know,” Ned says. “Guess I’ll see you later.”

“Just go – before she gets back!”

Ned wanders off and Alexis reappears -- as if she had been waiting for him to walk away.

She sits and watches Ned at the bar.

“I think I should go home,” she says.

“No, Alexis! Stay for a little while longer!”

“I don’t know…”

“Please?”

“Oh, alright,” Alexis says. “But only for a little while longer.”

___________________________________________________________

Sonny sees Luke standing outside of his club and hesitates. He doesn’t want to go at it with his ex-partner again. It was painful enough the last time.

But I didn’t come here to see Luke, he reminds himself.

He takes a deep breath and continues to walk to the door.

Luke looks up and sees him.

Here we go…

Sonny stops about four feet away from where Luke is standing.

“Luke,” he says.

“What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to…see someone.”

“Not on business, I hope.”

Sonny shakes his head.

“Good,” Luke says.

There is a moment of silence between them. It feels so strange for Sonny. He remembers that not long ago, Luke Spencer was like a brother. They watched each other’s back and helped each other in whatever way they could.

And then, thanks to the Cassadines, Lucky Spencer was presumed dead.

And suddenly the friendship was over, too.

“You know what?” Luke asks. “I think I’m turning over a new leaf or something. I mean, I sat down on a bench on the docks and had a drink with ol’ Stef Cassadine…and I’m even getting along with Prince Nikolas…I guess I’m going in for the clean slate deal these days…Care to join me?”

“I can go with that…”

Luke extends his hand. Sonny steps closer, reaches out, and shakes his hand.

Afterward, the two men stand next to each other – relieved that the dark times between them have passed.

“So,” Luke begins, “I hear you and Carly are divorced.”

“Yeah,” Sonny says. “It didn’t work out.”

“Well, having your wife try to turn you over to the Feds can put a strain on a marriage…”

Sonny laughs.

“I uh…I hear that you and Laura are engaged. Congratulations.”

“Thank you, man…So who is it that you came to see tonight?”

“A lady.”

“Must be a special lady for you to come down here…”

Sonny thinks for a moment.

“Yeah,” he admits. “She is pretty special.”

“Well, good luck,” Luke says. “I hope it works out.”

“So do I.”

Luke walks to the door and pulls it open. He stands to the side and holds it open for Sonny. Sonny smiles at him as he walks past him and into the dark club. Luke follows.

Sonny stands at the door for a moment, searching face after face and table after table for Alexis. He spots Ned at Jax and Skye’s table. He is annoyed briefly.

Then he is glad.

Good, he tells himself. The more, the merrier.

His eyes make contact with Laura Spencer’s as she comes from the direction of the office and strolls into the club.

She smiles at him and waves. He smiles back as Luke finds his way to her side.

“Are you and Sonny friends again?” she asks.

“We’re…taking things a step at a time,” Luke answers.

Sonny sees Alexis at the table with Kristina as a slow song begins to play. He passes one or two couples who stand to dance as he moves through the club and over to their table. He approaches slowly. Finally, he is standing at Alexis’ side.

“May I have this dance?” he asks.

Her head whips around when she hears his voice.

“What are you doing here?” she asks somewhat nervously.

He reaches for her hand and gently pulls her to her feet.

“I came to see you,” he says.

Sonny holds her hand and leads her out next to the other couples that are dancing. Alexis stiffens a bit, knowing that everyone who knows them is watching closely. She takes Sonny’s hand and feels his hand at her waist. She moves closer to him as they begin to dance.

Alexis’ eyes quickly scan the room. She sees Ned and Jax – watching her dance with Sonny and wearing looks of total disapproval on their faces. She inadvertently makes eye contact with Luke Spencer, who smiles at her and gives her a thumbs up sign.

I can’t stand that man…

She notices Kristina making her way over to Ned at the bar.

Then she shuts them all out.

She looks into Sonny’s eyes. He smiles and she takes a deep breath and exhales.

And she relaxes.

Sonny dances Alexis around slowly, holding her close, feeling her body against his. Her perfume catches his nose, reminding him of Puerto Rico and the Port Charles Hotel on the night they made love for the first time.

He lets go of her hand and drops his hand from her waist.

His hands move up to her face.

He takes her face in his hands and looks deeply into her eyes.

He kisses her tenderly.

Their lips separate.

“What are you doing?” she asks, startled by the suddenness.

“Lettin’ the cat out of the bag,” he answers.

Alexis stares at him for a moment.

Then she shakes her head and smiles.

She puts her arms around his neck and moves closer to him.

He puts his arms around her. She rests her head on his shoulder.

“I’m glad,” Alexis admits.
