Chapter Six
Sonny paces back and forth and back and forth again – waiting for the telephone to ring. He is anxious to get things underway. The sooner Roscoe calls, the sooner Alexis will be back home.
Mike closes the front door and stands to the side, watching and worrying and waiting.
“Can you stop pacing?” Mike asks. “You’re making me nervous.”
“I think better on my feet,” Sonny answers as he walks. “Where’d Kristina go?”
“Oh, she went back over to check if there were any messages from Ashton or Jax. You think she’s gonna tell them?”
“Probably. Won’t matter…”
“How long do you think it’s gonna take before Roscoe calls with his instructions? I mean, it’s been at least a couple of hours since you talked to Alexis…”
Sonny shrugs.
“I told you. This guy’s a psychopath – just like Sorel. He wants to drag it all out to try and rattle me – get me to make a mistake…As long as Alexis is okay, though…I can take it…”
“How do you know?” Mike asks hesitantly. “I mean…how do you know that Alexis is okay?”
“He won’t do anything to her,” Sonny says. “At least – not yet. He’d uh…he’d want me to watch…That’s what’s gonna buy me enough time to get her out of there…”
“You can’t be serious about going alone.”
“I have to go alone. If I don’t…he’ll hurt her, Mike. I know it…”
“So you’re just gonna walk in there without any back up at all? At least take Max or Francis…”
“Alone means alone, Mike,” Sonny insists. “I got no options.”
There’s a knock at the door. Max peeks in.
“Got a minute, Boss?” he says.
“Come on in,” Sonny says. “Mike…”
“I know, I know,” Mike says as he turns to leave the room. “I’ll be…in the kitchen.”
“Thanks,” Sonny calls after Mike as he leaves the room. “Whatcha got?”
“Renaldo’s downstairs – says he wants to work his regular shift…”
“Not ‘til I know about him one way or the other…You got anything yet?”
Max shakes his head no.
“Not yet,” he answers. “He looks clean – so far. I got a few other things to check out first, though.”
“Then get on it,” Sonny instructs. “I need to know as soon as possible. Anything else?”
“No.”
“Okay then,” Sonny begins. “Get rid of Renaldo and…stay on post downstairs until I tell you different.”
“Okay,” Max says.
He turns to leave.
“Take Adam back down with you,” Sonny calls after him.
Max stops.
“So who’s gonna be up here with you?” he asks.
“I’m fine,” Sonny insists. “I just need you guys to spread out downstairs – be on the look out...”
Max shakes his head.
“I don’t like this, Boss,” he says. “You’re not supposed to be alone.”
“I’m not alone,” he says. “Just…just do what you’re told.”
Max takes a deep breath.
“Whatever you say,” he says.
He opens the door and steps out as Mike wanders back into the living room.
“Is it uh…safe to come back out now?” he asks.
Sonny smiles.
“It’s safe,” he answers.
“I uh…couldn’t help overhearing…You’ve sent ‘em all away, haven’t you?”
“I don’t wanna go through this again, Mike…”
“Look, I’m sorry but I just don’t like the idea of you walking in there alone when this guy would like nothing better than to kill you.”
“This is the way the game is played. He holds someone…someone that I love…and I come runnin’. Standard drill…”
“But what are you gonna do when you get there?”
Sonny shrugs.
“I’ll think about that when the time comes,” he says.
The telephone rings.

Kristina rushes down the stairs of Alexis’ apartment, tucking in her shirt – her hair still wet from the quick shower that she just had.
She runs to the answering machine and glances at it, checking for any messages from Ned or Jax that she might have missed. Nothing.
She picks up her keys from the desk and turns to open the door when there is a knock.
She opens the door. There stands Sonny, wearing a trench coat.
“Something happen?” Kristina asks.
“Roscoe just called,” he answers. “I’m on my way out.”
“Wait a minute,” she says frantically. “Have you called the police? What about Ned and Jax? They should be back at any minute…”
“Kristina,” Sonny says. “I gotta go alone.”
“But what if something happens? What if he…hurts Alexis or hurts you?”
Sonny takes her hand.
“Come here for a minute,” he says.
He leads her over to the sofa.
“Please sit.”
Frustrated and afraid, she drops down onto the sofa. Sonny sits on the coffee table directly in front of her.
“Now, I’m gonna go get Alexis…and I’m gonna bring her back home.”
“Sonny…”
“Listen to me,” he interrupts. “Now you know how much your sister means to me. I’d never let anything or anyone hurt her. You know that, don’t you?”
She nods.
“Okay so I’m gonna do what this guy tells me to do…and I’m gonna get Alexis out of there and back home to you. You gotta trust me, Kristina.”
She looks into his dark and intense eyes and sees the emotion deep inside. And she knows that there’s no choice. She has to let Sonny do this his way. Otherwise she might never see her sister again.
“I trust you, Sonny,” she says quietly.
“Good,” he says.
He stands and turns to leave.
“Sonny?” Kristina calls just before he walks through the doorway.
He looks at her.
“Yeah?”
“…Be careful.”
Kristina follows him out the door and into the hallway. She sees Mike standing in Sonny’s open doorway, watching as Sonny opens the door to the stairway.
“She’s right, Michael,” Mike says. “Be careful.”
“I’ll be careful, Pop,” Sonny says before disappearing into the stairway.
Kristina wanders over to Mike.
“They’re gonna be okay, right?” she asks.
“You’ve gotta trust him, Kristina,” Mike says.
He turns back into Sonny’s apartment for a moment and comes back, putting on his jacket. He closes the door.
“Where are you going?” Kristina asks.
“I’ve got to…take care of a few things,” Mike answers. “Will you be alright?”
“I’ll be fine,” she answers. “Ned and Jax should be back at any time now…”
“Okay then,” Mike says. “I’ll see you later.”
Kristina watches as Mike opens the door to the stairway and quickly steps inside.

“The Boss says that you should go on back home and get some rest,” Max tells Renaldo as they stand just outside of Harborview Towers.
“I don’t need to rest,” Renaldo says. “I don’t get paid to rest. I wanna come back to work. I need to help find Miss Davis…”
“Look,” Max begins, “I’m just telling you what he told me. Now why don’t you go back home – take another day off?”
“Another day off,” Renaldo repeats. “You think I don’t know what’s goin’ on here? He thinks I had something to do with this, doesn’t he?”
“Renaldo…” Max begins, “just go home.”
“I didn’t do anything, Max,” Renaldo insists. “The guy stuck a needle in my neck. You believe me, don’t you?”
“Doesn’t matter whether I believe you or not,” Max insists. “Just go home and when The Boss wants you back at work…he’ll let you know.”
Renaldo resigns himself to the situation as he walks away.
“Right,” he says. “He’ll let me know…”

Alexis at last manages to untie the knot in the rope. She wriggles a bit and the rope falls from around her and onto the ground.
She breathes deeply and exhales and rubs her arms as she stands at long last. It feels wonderful to feel her feet back on the ground. She also feels the sting of what must be several rope burns along her arms – burns caused by repeated attempts to free herself.
“At least I’m not tied up anymore,” she whispers. “Now what do I do?”
She looks around her at the barren room. The only thing in that windowless room besides her is the chair and now the rope on the floor.
“Think, Alexis!” she instructs. “Roscoe’s plan – whatever it is – must be in motion already. Sonny will probably be walking into some kind of an ambush and you’re the bait…You have got to do something! Anything!”
She walks back and forth, trying to think of what that might be.
“Whatever you do,” she begins, “you can’t just sit in that chair, waiting for Roscoe to come and kill you…So think!”
She leans back against the door.
“Think of something,” she tells herself. “If you don’t…Roscoe will kill you both…”
