Chapter Two

Alexis sits and waits. And waits.

And waits.

She looks around her at the small room that she’s in. Her arms feel numb and the ropes that bind them to the chair feel as if they’re cutting into her skin. She cannot see her watch so she doesn’t know exactly how long she has been in this small closet of a room.

But she knows that it has to have been at least several hours.

They must really be worried about her now, she thinks. She can almost see Kristina babbling and demanding and frantic. Maybe Ned has wandered into the scene, standing in Sonny’s face and blaming him for whatever has happened. She can even see Jax there, cell phone pressed to his ear, promising that he will pay any price at all for anyone who can solve the puzzle of where Alexis Davis is.

So when are you going to find me, Alexis wonders. She looks around her and stares at the small, non-descript gray room that likely was once someone’s office. There are no windows, only one door, and a medium-sized metal grate high up on the wall. Oh and of course this chair that I’m tied to, she thinks.

Well so much for the décor…

Her breathing begins to accelerate for a moment or so before she can bring it back under control by taking deep breaths and blowing them back out slowly.

Then she closes her eyes and pictures Sonny in the middle of it all. She sees him strong and calm and in control, issuing orders to Benny and Johnny and everyone else working for him, demanding that they find her. The image helps to settle her a little – something that she has seen again and again – something familiar.

The loss of her own control is frightening. Even more frightening is the easy manner displayed by her captor – Roscoe. He hasn’t raised his voice. He hasn’t looked menacing. But he has been clear about his intentions. He hasn’t told her what will happen if he does not get what he wants but Alexis has always had a vivid imagination.

She knows that he will not hesitate to kill her.

But he really wants to kill Sonny, Alexis remembers.

She squeezes her eyes tight shut and replays better times in her mind. She remembers the beautiful green of New Hampshire and the release that she felt as she was finally able to escape her Cassadine prison in Greece. She remembers her relief at seeing Sonny walk into General Hospital after exploding that bomb in his apartment.

Her eyes shoot open and she gasps suddenly. Oh no, she tells herself. That was when Sonny got shot saving my life. He almost died. I had his blood all over my hands and my coat…

Alexis shakes the thoughts from her head. Soothing thoughts, she reminds herself – the kind that won’t make me want to run and hide. She closes her eyes again and forces herself to breathe at a steady pace.

Then she smiles.

She remembers the sensation of waking up in Sonny’s arms after they made love that first night. His arms felt so strong as they held her close, his touch so tender, his kisses so soft and inviting. She remembers dancing with him in Puerto Rico, feeling his arms around her. And that first kiss – so anticipated and so very satisfying. She remembers letting herself go and having a good cry with Sonny right there, knowing that he would never judge her or think of her as weak.

What a wonderful surprise it has been to have him in her life, she tells herself. Three years ago I would never have been able to imagine even having someone like Sonny Corinthos as a client. Now I can’t imagine not having that very Sonny Corinthos in my life as my best friend – not having him in my life as the man that I love.

But what if I never see him again?

What if I never see any of them again – not my little sister or my former fiancé or my former husband? Nikolas? What if Sonny can’t get to me in time? What if Roscoe decides to kill me just to get back at Sonny?

What if Roscoe gets what he really wants? What if he kills Sonny?

Alexis’ eyes shoot open again. This isn’t really helping, she thinks.

“I have to figure a way out of here,” she whispers to herself.

Sonny stands in the squad room at the PCPD and waits – against his better judgment. He watches uniformed personnel wander into and through the room, moving papers from one desk to another and he still doesn’t know whether or not they have any leads on where Helena Cassadine is. He can’t get any answers from Taggart – not surprisingly – nor anyone else. Taggart says that the department is working the case but, given the general level of competence in the Port Charles Police Department, his word doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. This leaves only Mac Scorpio as the one to talk to.

Sonny begins to pace back and forth along a short path as he waits.

Alexis has been missing for several hours now. No one has seen her since early yesterday morning when she was supposed to be on her way to court. Benny has his people scouring Port Charles for some idea of where she may have gone and who she may have gone with.

And somehow it doesn’t sound or feel like a Cassadine plot. Not for Sonny. Somehow he feels as if Alexis’ disappearance is directed at him in some way – a rival maybe or an enemy who wants to get back at him; an enemy who knows that the surest way to destroy Sonny Corinthos is to take Alexis Davis away from him.

Sonny glances at the interrogation room. Through the slits in the blinds, he sees Kristina’s bright red hair as she sits at the table. It wasn’t easy for him to tell her that Alexis couldn’t be found. It was even harder to stand by and watch while she called Ned Ashton and told him. He has never liked Ashton and has grown to like him even less over the past couple of years. Sonny watches through the blinds as Ned stands over Kristina, leaning close – his hand on her shoulder.

Sonny looks around him and wonders why he is standing in the middle of the Port Charles Police Department. He knows that they can’t help. Bringing them into this is just a waste of time when every moment spent should be out there somewhere, trying to find Alexis – trying to bring her back home. But Ashton and Kristina insisted. Candy Boy hasn’t been around yet but Sonny knows that it’s only a matter of time. Ashton said that he called him earlier.

The door to the interrogation room opens and Ned steps out. He pulls the door closed behind him and makes his way around and past uniform after uniform and over to where Sonny is standing.

“Anything?” he asks.

Sonny shakes his head no.

“I told you this would be a waste of time,” Sonny says.

“Look, we need all the help we can get if we’re going to find Alexis,” Ned insists. “If it is Helena Cassadine, maybe the police can track her down.”

“Right,” Sonny says. “Like the way they held onto her?”

“Alright then, Sonny,” Ned begins, “what do you think we should do? I haven’t noticed your squad of goons rushing in here with any information about where Alexis is.”

“I’ve got my people looking for her. I shouldn’t be wasting my time in here when I could be out there trying to find her…You know what? You wait for Mac Scorpio.”

“Where are you going?”

“I’m gonna do this my way,” Sonny says.

Sonny walks away from Ned, pushes through the low gate, and turns the corridor on his way out of the PCPD. He goes to the main entrance, opens the door, and walks outside.

As he descends the front steps, the feeling in his gut grows stronger and stronger. This isn’t about Alexis, he tells himself with more and more certainty.

This is about me.

Just then his cell phone rings.

Sonny reaches into his pocket, takes out the phone, pushes the button, and puts the phone to his ear.

“Benny? What do ya got?”

“You’re not gonna like it…”

“I don’t like it already,” Sonny says. “What?”

“One of the guys talked to somebody who says that he saw Roscoe yesterday…”

Sonny’s blood runs cold.

“Roscoe? I thought he’d been taken care of…”

“We used a couple of out of town people for that job, remember? Turns out that they haven’t been seen or heard from for awhile now…”

“And why weren’t we informed?”

“Sonny…”

“Forget it,” Sonny interrupts. “I don’t care about any of that right now. We’ll deal with that later. What about Alexis?”

“They turned up her car.”

“Where?”

“At that dump north of town,” Benny answers. “No sign of her…”

“But?” Sonny asks, hearing what Benny didn’t say.

“Miss Davis doesn’t smoke, does she?”

“No. Why?”

“They found a butt in the ashtray – one of those long brown cigarillo things…”

“The kind that Roscoe smokes…”

“Exactly,” Benny says.

Sonny takes a deep breath and exhales, his worst fears coming true.

“Find them, Benny,” he says. “Get out there and I don’t care what you have to do…Squeeze a few people, call in some favors…Put the pressure on, go through whoever you have to go through, knock down whatever doors you need to knock down…Find her.”

“We’ve got people on it already. We’ve got guys positioned all over town. He won’t get out of Port Charles…”

“He’s not trying to get out of Port Charles,” Sonny says. “He’s gonna stay right here – under my nose…and be someplace…where I can’t...where I can’t get to him…Listen, keep looking – all of Roscoe’s old haunts, all of Sorel’s old places…We gotta…we gotta get Alexis away from him…”

“I’m already on it,” Benny says. “Any sign of Renaldo?”

“No…”

“Oh…So where will you be?”

“Home,” Sonny says as he motions for his driver to pull the car in front. “When Roscoe thinks that he’s twisted the knife enough, he’s gonna, you know…he’s gonna contact me. And I’m gonna make it easy for him to find me…”

“Be careful,” Benny says.

“Right,” Sonny answers.

He pushes the button to disconnect and puts the phone back in his pocket as the car pulls in front of him. The driver comes around and opens the door. Sonny climbs into the backseat, slumps down, and leans his head back as the door is closed.

When the hell am I gonna learn, he asks himself. People I love get hurt because of me. Now this…

He stares straight ahead as the car pulls away from the curb.

But I can’t lose Alexis, he tells himself.

“I can’t,” he whispers.
