Chapter One
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Alexis calls as she grabs her pencil and quickly stands up from the table.
She hurries to the door to answer the annoyingly persistent knock that has interrupted her work. She places her hand on the doorknob, prepared to turn it, but stops – remembering that she has more reason to be cautious these days.
“Who is it?” she asks.
“Sonny,” comes the answer.
Alexis twists the knob and pulls open the door.
“What’s up?” she asks.
“Nothin’ much,” Sonny answers. His eyes dart past her into the apartment and back. “Can I come in?”
Alexis stands to the side. Sonny kisses her gently before walking past her and into the apartment.
“So?” she asks as she looks over the top of her glasses.
“That was good,” he says. “You know – askin’ who’s there before you open the door…It’s a good habit to get into…”
“Well, you’ve told me that there’s reason to be cautious so…”
“I’m glad you’re listenin’ to me for a change…”
“Well, I am – for a change. I have to be paranoid for two now, you know…”
“That’s right,” Sonny says. He quickly glances down at her stomach and then looks back up – dimples clearly visible. “You’re uh…startin’ to show a little…”
“Well, it has been nearly four months…”
“That’s kinda cute...”
“Cute?” Alexis repeats. “I don’t think I’ve ever before been referred to as cute…I’m not sure if I like it or not…I would love to stand here and watch you flash but I am in the middle of something…”
“Yeah, I figured that…”
“Sonny?”
“Well, you know, I just wanted to…talk to you about somethin’…”
“At last,” she mutters. “And what’s that?”
Sonny gently guides her over to the sofa.
“Have a seat,” he says.
“Uh oh,” she says as she sits. “Is whatever this is that bad?”
“It’s not bad at all,” he answers. He sits on the sofa next to her. “I was just…thinkin’ about something and…I wanted to get your take…”
Alexis smiles patiently.
“My take on what?”
“Well,” he begins, “I’ve been thinkin’ that…well you’re pregnant and everything…”
“True.”
“And we’re, you know – back together…more or less…”
“And all of this has made you think about what, exactly?”
“Have I ever told you…well, you know…how much I love you?”
“How sweet,” Alexis says. “I love you, too.” She stands. “Is that it?”
“Not yet,” he says as he pulls her back down to the sofa.
Alexis shakes her head and puts her pencil down on the coffee table.
“You’re driving me insane. You do know that, don’t you?”
“I was thinkin’ that, you know…maybe you should think about…movin’ in across the hall…”
“There now, that wasn’t so hard, was it?” she asks. “I don’t think so but thank you for suggesting it…”
She stands. He grabs her hand again and pulls her back down onto the sofa.
“Why not?”
“Why not?” she repeats. “For a million reasons…”
“How ‘bout one?”
“One reason,” she says. “Alright, Mr. Corinthos. I’ll give you one reason. I am very happy here in my own apartment and I don’t want to leave it."
“Yeah but you’d still be livin’ in the penthouse…”
“But I would be living in the penthouse with you…”
“What’s wrong with that? We get along."
“You’re missing the point…”
“What is the point?”
“I like having my own apartment,” Alexis insists. “Besides…Besides where would Kristina go if I moved out?”
“She wouldn’t have to go anywhere. She could still live here…”
“But she can’t afford the rent…”
“Then she can live here rent-free. Anything else?”
Alexis stands.
“Yes, there is…”
Sonny watches as she walks over to the terrace doors and looks out.
“You’re not sayin’ anything…”
“I…can’t think of anything at the moment,” she admits. “But I do know that this is not a good idea…”
“Look Alexis,” Sonny says as he stands and approaches her, “we love each other. We get along with each other. We enjoy each other’s company. You have your career. I have mine…”
“That’s certainly an understatement…”
“And you’re gonna have our baby,” Sonny continues. “What else is there?”
“And how many times do I have to tell you that I do not want to start dismantling my life just because I happen to be pregnant?”
“We wouldn’t be dismantling your life, Alexis,” Sonny says. “We’d be constructing a new one…What’s so wrong with that?”
“What’s so wrong is that you wouldn’t be asking this if it weren’t for the fact that I’m pregnant…”
“How do you know?”
“Oh right,” she scoffs. “You intended to ask me to move in all along. It must have been your natural shyness that kept you from doing it before now…”
“Well, I…can be kinda shy – from time to time…Besides you lived with me before, remember? That’s how you got pregnant in the first place…”
“I know,” she says.
“And you’re the one who decided to move out. I didn’t want you to go, remember?”
Their eyes meet.
“I remember…”
“Look,” Sonny begins as he pulls her into his arms, “all I want is to keep you and the baby safe…and near me…And it’s not just because you’re pregnant, Alexis…and you know it.”
Alexis wraps her arms around him, feeling his muscular arms holding her close -- his scent catching her nose and the steady in and out of his breathing lulling her into an almost peaceful state.
I’m afraid of you, Mr. Corinthos. I don’t want to be consumed by what’s happening between us…and I think that that’s what would happen…if I’m not careful…
“I know,” she manages. “But I…”
Sonny kisses her forehead and hugs her.
“You uh,” he begins as he lets her go and walks to the door, “…you just think about it…okay?”
“Sonny…”
“Think about it,” he repeats. He opens the door. “And don’t work too hard…”
“I won’t,” she says as the door closes behind him.
She shakes her head, takes a deep breath, and exhales very slowly.
“Work!” she reminds herself. “I need to get back to work!”
With a determined gait, Alexis marches back over to the coffee table and picks up her pencil. She walks back over to the table and sits – staring at the open yellow pad and trying to remember exactly where she left off.
And then her mind drifts once again.
“Criminal and gentle soul,” she says. “Father-to-be and and habitual suspect…Love him but don’t get too close…Move in with him or don’t move in with him…”
She shakes her head.
“This is even more complicated than it was before…”
