Chapter Fifteen
Mike Corbin leans on a wall, his back to the actual waiting room – waiting for another update on Sonny’s condition through so many hours of surgery. He knows how strong his son is – how strong his son has always been. But he can’t help wondering whether or not Sonny has enough strength to survive after being on the operating table for so many hours and having lost as much blood as he must surely have lost already.
Carly sits on the end of the sofa, legs crossed and her body turned away. She has cried so many tears already that she doesn’t know whether or not she will be able to cry again should it be necessary. This never would have happened if she and Sonny were still together, she tells herself over and over again. Sonny would never have sacrificed himself to protect her. She’s not like Alexis. She is strong and tough enough to have been able to take care of herself. Getting involved with Alexis Davis was Sonny’s big mistake – one that just might cost him his life.
Kristina sits cross-legged on the floor of the waiting room – just near Alexis in the chair. Over the months of living next door, she has gone back and forth between like and total dislike of Sonny Corinthos. Sure, he’s dark and broody and incredibly attractive. But he’s also arrogant and controlling and ill-mannered and dangerous. People around him get hurt. Alexis was nearly killed. But for Kristina, the one redeeming quality that Sonny possesses has always been his love for Alexis. Say what you will about him, there aren’t many men who would without hesitation sacrifice their own lives for that of the woman they love. Sonny is definitely one of those men. And, as she glances up at Alexis sitting in the nearby chair, Kristina is only too grateful.
Alexis sits in the chair in the corner of the waiting room, staring in front of her and waiting. She hasn’t moved around much – only standing when she has had to stretch and whenever some doctor has come to the waiting room with an update on Sonny’s condition. The last update was almost a couple of hours earlier. That doctor explained that Sonny had been shot six times and had lost a great deal of blood before he was brought to the hospital. That doctor explained that the bullets that tore into Sonny’s body had done a great deal of damage and that now that they had been removed, Sonny’s body would have to be repaired. Some of the bullets were in precarious positions near vital parts of Sonny’s body, like his heart, lungs, and even his spine and that’s what made removing them so tricky. According to Mike, Dr. Tony Jones had been on emergency room duty when Sonny was brought in by ambulance. Tony Jones was the doctor on duty when Alexis was brought to the hospital – although she had no personal recollection of it. She only remembers what Sonny told her afterward. Tony had managed to keep Alexis alive and he did the same for Sonny. According to Mike, Tony said that it was a miracle that Sonny had been shot so many times and lost so much blood and managed to drive a car and get as far as he did before losing consciousness behind the wheel. According to the police the car had swerved on the road just outside of Port Charles and crashed to a stop against a huge oak tree in someone’s front yard. Sonny always kept himself in good physical condition. Alexis has no doubt that it helped him to survive this latest physical trauma.
Alexis feels a flutter in her swollen stomach and knows that the baby – hers and Sonny’s baby – is sensing her anxiety. Normally at this time of the day – the middle of the night – the baby is fast asleep. It’s time again for a few deep breaths and as much calm as she can provide.
Alexis inhales deeply and blows it back out slowly – once, twice. She’s thankful that Kristina stayed with her. At least she remembered to remind Alexis to eat something. Alexis refused to leave the waiting room and so Kristina snuck something in from the outside and up to the 7th floor. Alexis glances at Kristina sitting zen-like on the floor nearby and wishes that she would go home and get some rest. She told Kristina as much earlier but she was insistent on standing by while Sonny was in surgery – while Alexis needed her.
She can’t get out of her mind the fact that Sonny is being operated on for wounds sustained while he was out in the dark somewhere, protecting Alexis and their unborn baby. Carly is never right about anything as far as Alexis is concerned. But she tells herself over and over again that Carly was right about one thing.
Alexis abandoned Sonny and still he nearly died protecting her.
Alexis shoots to her feet.
“Are you alright?” Kristina asks, breaking the silence.
“I’m fine, Kristina,” Alexis answers. “I just need to stand for a minute…”
Under Kristina’s watchful eye, she paces a little, stretching and twisting and trying to loosen up. She walks past where Carly sits, fully expecting the usual eruption but none comes.
She puts a gentle hand on Mike’s shoulder, mildly startling him.
“Are you alright?” she asks quietly.
“I’m uh…trying to remember how badly hurt Sonny was when he was shot the last time…and how he made it back from it…”
“He’ll make it again, Mike,” Alexis reassures. “Sonny is strong and as stubborn as they come. He’d never give his enemies the satisfaction of dying…”
Mike smiles.
“Well, you may be right about that,” he says. “How are you?”
“I’m alright,” Alexis answers. “I’m fine.”
“You do know that you should probably go home, don’t you?”
“I’m afraid I can’t do that,” she says. “I have to be here when Sonny wakes up.”
“He’d rather that you were safely at home…”
“Well,” she begins, “this isn’t the first thing that Sonny and I have disagreed about. It won’t be the last…”
“From your mouth…”
At that moment, from around the corner, Dr. Tony Jones appears, wearing his surgical scrubs.
Carly stands.
“Tony,” she demands, “how is he?”
“How is he, Tony?” Alexis repeats.
“Well,” Tony begins, “I won’t lie to any of you. Sonny’s lost a great deal of blood. There were six separate bullet wounds that had to be repaired and they each did a great deal of damage…”
“But my son is alive…”
“Yes, Mike,” Tony says. “Sonny’s alive. But these next hours are critical. There is always the possibility of infection but we’re treating him with large doses of antibiotics and we’re monitoring him.”
“I wanna see him!” Carly demands.
“I’m afraid not, Carly,” Tony says. “Sonny needs his rest right now.”
Mike heaves a deep sigh of relief.
“Thank you, Dr. Jones,” he says.
Tony nods in that way that doctors have and walks away and over to the station desk.
“Excuse me,” Alexis says as she touches Mike’s arm and leaves to follow Tony. “Tony?”
“Yes, Alexis?”
“How is he really?” she asks.
“I just told you. He made it through surgery and he’s in recovery. I really can’t tell you any more than that.”
“You’ve told us everything, right?”
“I’ve told you everything,” Tony says. “By the way…I haven’t had a chance to congratulate you on your pregnancy.”
“Thank you,” Alexis says as she places a hand on her stomach. “This little girl will need her father. Thank you so much for keeping him alive…”
Tony looks into her teary brown eyes and gently touches her hand.
“You’re welcome,” he says.
Alexis makes her way back to the waiting room, where Kristina stands and approaches her.
“Are you alright?” Kristina asks.
Alexis smiles.
“You keep asking me that,” she says. “I’m alright. You know…I was sitting over in that chair, praying as hard as I could…that he would make it through surgery…and promising everything I could think of if only he would…”
“And now he has…”
“And now he has,” Alexis repeats. “…We’ve been given another chance, Kristina. I’ve been given another chance…and I intend to make the most of it – whatever it takes.”
