Chapter Eleven
Alexis sits at the table in Part A, the courtroom where Judge Gibb generally presides over her cases. She sits at the defense table, writing note after note on her legal-size yellow pad. The courtroom is empty since court is not set to convene for another forty-five minutes and her client, one Don Elliot is not set to meet her for another fifteen minutes. Alexis just wants to get settled and jot down whatever last minute notes occur to her before court convenes.
The door behind her opens quietly. She is so engrossed in the particulars of the case that she doesn’t hear the door open or close.
Alexis shakes her head and rips the page that she has been writing on.
“She will eat me alive if I say that,” she mutters to herself.
“Talkin’ to yourself now?”
Her head whips around as she recognizes the voice.
It’s Sonny.
“Sonny,” she says as she stands, her heart racing. “You startled me…”
“I’m sorry,” he says. “Didn’t mean to scare you…”
“That’s alright,” she says. “I’m…just a little jittery…” She takes a deep breath and tries to relax. “What are you doing here?”
“I had…somethin’ to take care of. I was passin’ by and I saw Adam outside and…I thought I’d…say hi - see how you’re doin’…”
“Oh…I’m okay.”
“How’s the…new place comin’?”
Alexis shrugs.
“It’s an apartment,” she answers. “I haven’t quite gotten used to it yet but…it’s coming along…”
“Good,” he says. “I’m glad…You uh…you’re not workin’ too hard, are you?”
Alexis smiles.
“Not to worry,” she reassures. “Kristina keeps a vigilant watch over my comings and goings. She’d never let me overdo…We’re fine…”
“Good…Well I’ll…let you get back to what you were doin’…” He turns to leave and then turns back around. “There’s somethin’ else…”
“Yes?”
“I uh…I get why you…did what you did…I just wanted you to know that…”
Alexis stares at him, her eyes misting over. She watches as he walks to the door.
“Sonny?” she calls after him.
He turns around.
“Yeah?”
“You…look like hell,” she says. “You need to take better care of yourself…”
Their eyes connect and Sonny smiles.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he says quietly. “See ya.”
Alexis watches as he opens the door and steps out. She watches the door close behind him.
“See ya,” she whispers to herself.

Much later in the day, Carly impatiently presses the elevator button on the penthouse floor of the Harborview Towers as one of Sonny’s guards – this one named Samuel – stands to the side. Carly had come looking for Sonny only to find no one here. She makes up her mind that she will find him – wherever he happens to be.
The elevator doors open and she starts in before stopping suddenly.
She comes face to face with Sonny’s brown eyes.
“Carly,” he says as he steps out of the elevator. “What can I do for you?”
“I need to talk to you about something,” Carly answers.
“Can it wait?”
“Well, it’s about Michael – not your new baby with Alexis so…I guess it’s not all that important…”
Sonny rolls his eyes and goes to his apartment door.
“Come in,” he relents.
“Thanks,” she says. She looks around for a moment. “How come there’s nobody with you?”
Sonny unlocks and opens the door to his apartment. He holds it open for her.
“I don’t have a lot of time, Carly so…can you get to it?”
“Fine,” she says as she stomps into the apartment.
“Wait here,” he instructs Samuel.
“Yes, Mr. Corinthos,” he says before taking up his post outside of Sonny’s apartment.
“What is it, Carly?”
“Why haven’t you been to visit Michael lately?”
Sonny shrugs.
“I’ve been, you know…caught up in somethin’…I’ve called him…”
“Yeah well, calling him’s not the same as seeing him, Sonny. Now I know that you’re expecting this baby with Alexis but that doesn’t give you the right to treat my son like he’s not important – just because he’s only your adopted son.”
Sonny laughs to himself.
“Carly,” he begins, “you know that that’s not what’s happenin’. I got people tryin’ to get to me and it’s my job to keep my choices in life from hurtin’ people around me. Michael’s safer on the other end of the telephone right now…”
“Is that the real reason?”
“The real reason? What other reason do I need? What – you want what happened to Ryan to happen to Michael, too? Think, Carly…”
“I am thinking!” she insists. “And…I know how much you’ve always wanted a baby of your own. I just don’t want my son to get pushed to the side because you’re about to have the child you’ve always wanted…”
“That will never happen. I promised Michael that I’d always be here for him. I said it and I meant it. The current situation has to be taken care of first – so that everybody stays safe…”
Just then the telephone rings.
Sonny walks to the desk and picks up the receiver.
“Yeah?” he yells in frustration.
“I hate stand-offs. Don’t you?” comes the voice on the other end.
Slowly Sonny realizes who the voice must belong to.
“That all depends on whatcha got in mind,” he replies as calmly as he can.
“Well,” Lundine continues, “what I got in mind is a meeting. You meet me in Joey’s favorite hotel…”
“Uh, that’s pretty far away from where I am now,” Sonny answers, trying not to say too much in front of Carly. “Why don’t you come to me?”
“I could do that,” Lundine says. “Only I don’t like walking into traps…”
“Neither do I…”
“But I’ve got a pretty good bargaining chip,” Lundine says. “How do you think that girlfriend of yours would feel about it? Maybe I’ll ask her…”
“Who are we talkin’ about now?” he asks, afraid that he already knows.
“You know,” Lundine says. “Children are something special, aren’t they? They make us all do things that we might not normally do – like take all kinds of risks…just to keep ‘em safe…”
Sonny’s heart pounds.
“When?” he asks.
“You get yourself here, Corinthos,” Lundine says. “Come to Joey’s hotel - alone. You remember which one that is, don’t you – or has it been too long since you took him out?”
“I remember.”
“Well, you get here. I’ll be in touch when you are.”
“One thing, though.”
“Yeah?”
“You lay a hand on her,” he begins, “…and I’ll kill you myself…”
Lundine laughs.
“There’s only one way to prevent that,” he says. “Just make sure you get here.”
The line goes dead.
Sonny slams down the receiver.
“What is it?” Carly asks. “Who was that?”
“Nothin’…”
He heads for the door, Carly hot on his heels.
“That was him, wasn’t it?” she continues. “What – did he threaten to do something to Alexis?”
Sonny pulls open the door.
“Make sure she gets home,” Sonny instructs Samuel as he continues to the elevator and presses the button.
“Sonny,” Carly says. “You can’t do whatever you’re about to do. It’s just their way of getting you out in the open. Don’t you know that?”
The elevator doors open.
“Stay out of it,” he says.
“Sonny?”
“I mean it!” he yells as he pounds the lobby button. “Go home. Samuel, get her outta here.”
“Yes, Mr. Corinthos.”
“Don’t let her outta your sight,” he says as the doors begin to close.
“Sonny, stop!” Carly calls.
Samuel pulls her backward and holds her there – just long enough for the elevator doors to close.
“Get your hands off of me!” Carly demands as she wriggles free. “You idiot! You should be out there with Sonny. He’s all alone!”
“I got my orders, Mrs. Corinthos.”
“Yeah, right,” she says as she bangs on the elevator button. “You stay here and obey your little orders…while Sonny goes out there…and gets himself killed…”
